Film.. my first rolls

From time to time you give something a try as an interest and it just happens to pan out. Sometimes (if you are lucky enough) this can come from the generosity of others and give you the push you needed into stepping outside your usual bounds. This has happened to be over the last couple of months, with the very kind donation of a film camera to my to try. After fiddling with it and putting a couple of rolls through I have now finally had my first rolls developed.

A lot of the main inspiration for me behind film is the process and thought that is required.

With composition, light, exposure, ISO and subject matter all coming together a lot more differently to digital. You take for granted that old preview screen.. infact.. I had some odd faces when I would instantly look at the back of the bare camera after a shot 🙂 For me.. I want to bring together a whole new level of memories for myself, my friends and my family. Film has a lasting quality that will far outlive the pixelated snaps from an iPhone. I think the raw emotion, moment, capture and feel of the photos will be something we can all keep and enjoy as the years pass.

And how about the colours? The dynamic range? The grain? … I dont think anyone can argue the benefits of film and what it can bring to the table.
Unfortunately as evident above.. this Nikon EM needs a little bit of TLC as it has a light leak. Never fear.. a seal kit is in the mail and ill be giving it a spruce prior to some Australia Day festivities. I will leave you with a shot I enjoy a lot.. very shallow DOF but shot in low light and with great effect.. I love the colours of the skin and the background against the ice cream itself.
I could finish this post without thanking the Wilson’s (especially Kate) for the donation of the camera. I hope to take a shot to enlarge and frame for you one day as a big thank you.
I have just finished developing my first roll.. well half roll.. and there lies another blog post soon 🙂

Till next time..

Nice work Jack – takes me back – right back….

The colours are gorgeous and there is something so fulfilling about having to wait for the end results.

    Enjoy!

  • It really is a shame about that light spill in the second last photo. You could see it was a corker of a shot. Still looks good though 🙂

Have fun with film. It’s easy to sense how wrapped up you are in it and I know the feeling all too well. Enjoy. 🙂
